New Season

The new season of Keswick Photographic Society began on Wednesday 2nd September 2026, when we welcomed members both old and new.

Club member Mike Kidd opened the first half of the evening with a talk about his travels in Africa, India and Scotland. Mike is a keen wildlife photographer who showed us some stunning images, including ones of tigers. His most recent trip was just a few weeks ago to the Masai Mara in Kenya where he photographed the wildebeest migration which included a crossing of the Mara River. His photographs highlighted the dangers of the crossing with many crocodiles waiting to prey on the younger and weaker animals.

His travels closer to home have included a visit to the Slate Islands of Luing and Seil off the west coast of Scotland where he photographed the local cattle and landscape. He has also photographed Red Kites near Stirling where there is now a thriving community having been reintroduced between 1996 and 2001. Closer to home he showed images of Sparrow Hawks taken in Cumbria.

The second half of the evening was taken up by Simon Roberts, another club member and wildlife enthusiast. Simon lives in the Great Langdale Valley and his presentation focused on the wildlife in his garden and the surrounding area. He has gone to great lengths to photograph these and he showed some lovely images of Red Squirrels, Barn Owls, Roe Deer and Badgers. Some of these were achieved with doorbell cameras and discreet flood lighting. Earlier this year he concentrated on photographing a family of Dippers taking great care not to disturb them. By sitting quietly in the water, he was able to watch the parents flying to and from the nest and then, once the chicks had fledged, he photographed the chicks being fed. Simon’s images were of a very high quality and his talk provided a fascinating insight into the wildlife of the valley.
