Critique Evening: 20th October 2026

Unfortunately, the speaker for our meeting on 21st October had to cancel at short notice due to ill health but, luckily, we already had a critique session scheduled for Tuesday 20th October so members didn’t miss out entirely.

The critique was carried out by two of our longstanding members, Alan Walker and Dr Keith Snell via Zoom. In total 43 images were submitted by 12 different authors, some of whom are experienced photographers and others new or novice members. Overall, the standard of images was very high and Alan and Keith felt that many would do well in club competitions. The subject matter included landscapes, portraits, wildlife and sport amongst others.

Alan and Keith gave many helpful tips including cropping, removing distracting elements, increasing contrast, lightening and darkening areas and adding vignettes. Audience participation was invited and there were some lively discussions as not everyone agreed on the changes, indeed Alan and Keith sometimes had different ideas. This was an opportunity for members to receive advice on how to improve their images in a friendly and informal atmosphere. By the end of the evening everyone felt that they had learnt something.

These critique evenings have become a regular feature, often in addition to our published programme, and we hope to hold more in the future.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 28th October when several members of Dalston Photographic Society will be showing their work. Prospective new members and visitors are always welcome to join us at 7.30pm in the Quaker Meeting House, opposite Booths supermarket, Keswick or alternatively via Zoom. Please contact us with with any questions or to reserve a place.
